Having more open definitions
What's new?

One of the studio members asked for Mindful Boston’s printed calendar to have more diverse holidays. That sounded great to me, so I’ve looked into it.

The studio’s current printed calendar states that the New Year starts tomorrow. And now that I have brought my “lens of mindfulness” to look more deeply at that, I see that it falls apart.

Spoiler alert: many things that seemed solid do end up falling apart when looked at deeply with a mindfulness lens.

My search for holidays has led me to observe differing lenses on time, differing concepts about what it means to start, and when to start, differing definitions for the meaning of “New Year.”

I’ve learned that New Year celebrations happen throughout the seasons. Chinese Lunar New Year- February, Indian Solar New Year- April, Islamic New Year- July, Jewish New Year- October.

This exploration has been part of the calendar collaboration project at Mindful Boston. And we’re looking for more info. Do you have a New Year celebration to add to our collaboration? Do you have a correction for a holiday that’s been mistakenly identified? Use the comments or the contact form to let me know. Thanks!

Time check!

As already mentioned, Western New Year starts tomorrow.

This edition of the Sunday News has been part of a count-down series of emails ending 2023 in style.

This was Part 8A about redefining the calendar, Part 8b with New Year event listings will post tomorrow. And then Part 9 will be posting next week on Sunday Jan 7, to finish up this particular series. Feel free to request topics for the next series in the Sunday News.

Take care,
