Skin

Skin

As I was driving along, phone clipped to the dashboard, my phone took this photo of its perspective of the car.

The theme for these last two Sunday News emails has been changing one’s perspective by looking more closely at things.

Things get real at a whole new level when we’re being really present, and up close. Being present and aware leads to caring. Another way to say caring, or being invested, is the phrase “skin in the game.” It can be a reference to the vulnerability of your own body.

This story is part of my continuing journey detailing why there is still a studio for practice even now that there is also a radio station for listening to mindfulness audio.

A radio station broadcasts a signal. It is a conduit for pleasant sounds. It offers a little guided audio as you navigate the airwaves, and the apps, and the internet, and the politics, and everything else. A beacon offers a navigation light to follow, it’s a light touch that doesn’t transform much. It’s just a nice assist sometimes.

And then, there’s deeper work to be done. If actual transformational mindfulness is to happen at all, there is no substitute for the in-person laboratory experiences. A practice studio is where we do the real work. Put our skin in the game. Change our perspectives. Get invested. Learn a new relationship to stress.

Studio members will be meeting next Sunday June 23rd at 2pm. I hope you can join us in-person.
